16th East Asia Summit

The East Asia Summit is the premier leaders-led forum in the Indo-Pacific and was came in existence in 2005.

  • Since its inception in 2005, it has played a significant role in strategic and geopolitical evolution of East Asia and once a year annul summit is being held.
  • Member countries:  Apart from 10 ASEAN member states  East Asia includes India, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the US , Republic of Korea and Russia.
    • 10 ASEAN( Association of South East Asian Nation)  countries are:
      1. Myammar
      2. Thailand 
      3. Laos
      4. Indonesia
      5. Malaysia
      6. Philippines
      7. Singapore
      8. Vietnam
      9. Cambodia
      10. Brunei
      11. India 
      12. China
      13. Japan
      14. The US
      15. Russia
      16. Australia
      17. New Zealand
      18. Republic of Korea
  • India being a founding member of the East Asia Summit is committed to strengthening the East Asia Summit and making it more effective for dealing with contemporary challenges.
  • It is also an important platform for furthering practical cooperation in Indo Pacific by building upon the convergence between (ASEAN OUTLOOK ON INDO-PACIFIC) (AOIP) and INDO PACIFIC OCEAN INITIATIVE (IPOI).
  • Challenges: there are few dialogue issues such as:
    • economic recovery
    • terrorism
    • mental health
    • maritime security
    • tourism

  Topic.        Indian society .        Modern history   Issues related to women during colonial period  Prelims  Mains GS1  Sati   It was a orthodox evil practice to burn widow alive on her husband's pyre without her will. This practice was largely followed by the higher classes of the society.  It was William bentinck who made it a crime against humanity in 1829 and strongly supported by  Rajaram Mohan Ray. It was the main achievement of British government in India to to modernise the societies of India  Government of India passed an act in 1856 to enable widow remarriage  and  Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidya Sagar had requested for making law regarding widow remarriage.  Government of India tried to practice of killing women infanticide and dowry system.

Article 44 (Uniform Civil Code)

Topic  :          constitution of India   Part 1V of constitution of India mandates to central government under "Directive Principles of State policy "  Article 44  Mandates that " State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India "  Issues  Interfaith marriage : Allahabad High Court directed the marriage registrar/ officer to register the marriage without awaiting/ insisting approval of district authority. And also directed the central government to consider the constitution of a committee/ commission for implementing mandates of Article 44.
