16th East Asia Summit

The East Asia Summit is the premier leaders-led forum in the Indo-Pacific and was came in existence in 2005.

  • Since its inception in 2005, it has played a significant role in strategic and geopolitical evolution of East Asia and once a year annul summit is being held.
  • Member countries:  Apart from 10 ASEAN member states  East Asia includes India, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the US , Republic of Korea and Russia.
    • 10 ASEAN( Association of South East Asian Nation)  countries are:
      1. Myammar
      2. Thailand 
      3. Laos
      4. Indonesia
      5. Malaysia
      6. Philippines
      7. Singapore
      8. Vietnam
      9. Cambodia
      10. Brunei
      11. India 
      12. China
      13. Japan
      14. The US
      15. Russia
      16. Australia
      17. New Zealand
      18. Republic of Korea
  • India being a founding member of the East Asia Summit is committed to strengthening the East Asia Summit and making it more effective for dealing with contemporary challenges.
  • It is also an important platform for furthering practical cooperation in Indo Pacific by building upon the convergence between (ASEAN OUTLOOK ON INDO-PACIFIC) (AOIP) and INDO PACIFIC OCEAN INITIATIVE (IPOI).
  • Challenges: there are few dialogue issues such as:
    • economic recovery
    • terrorism
    • mental health
    • maritime security
    • tourism
