Hypersonic Missile and Ballistic Missile

  • It can fly at more than five times the speed of sound.
  • It can deliver a nuclear warhead like ballistic missile
  • Hypersonic missile flies on a trajectory low in the atmosphere, potentially reaching a target more quickly while a ballistic missile fly high into the space in an arc to reach their target.
  • A Hypersonic missile is manoeuvrable making it harder to track and defend against.
Note

  • The US, Russia and China possess most advance Hypersonic missile
  • Australia, India Japan, France and Germany are developing Hypersonic missile technology.
  • Along with China, the United States, Russia and at least five other countries are working on Hypersonic technology.
  • China has recently tested a nuclear capable Hypersonic missile that circled the globe. This newly tested weapon has two component- one, the Hypersonic glider and the second is the low Earth orbiting space system also known as Fractional Orbital Bombardment System ( FOBS), both independently designed to defeat American missile defence Systems.
  • Australia has collaborated with The US for Hypersonic missile development
  • While India has collaborated with Russia for Hypersonic missile development on BrahMos II , a Mach 7 Hypersonic missile.
  • India is also developing its indigenous, Dual capable Hypersonic cruise missile as part of its Hypersonic Technology Demonstration Vehicle Programme and successfully tested a Mach 6 Scramjet in June 2019 and Sept 2020.
  • India operates approximately 12 Hypersonic wind Tunnels and i capable  of testing speed of upto Mach !3.
  • France has also collaborated and contracted with Russia on development of Hypersonic technology
  • Japan, is developing the Hypersonic cruise missile (HCM) and Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile.
  • Russia: it had announced in 2018 an array of new Hypersonic missile that could hit almost any point in the world. Recently, it launched its Zircon Hypersonic missile.
