Russia is in 7 decades old ties with India, which is critical in the regional and global balance of power. India is also focusing on trade and investment opportunities in Russia's Far East  including in coal and diamonds and for meeting man power need. Two sides have increased the target for two way investments to $ 50 billion by 2025 as the earlier target of $ 30 billion had been achieved in 2018.

Defense Cooperation: it is strengthened by co-development and co-production

Defense agreements

  • Brahmos aerospace is a joint venture of Indian and the Russian government for manufacturing Bramhos Missile
  • S-400 Triumph Missile Systems: the delivery of the first squadron of air defense systems, which is part of a $ 5.4 billion contract with Russia for five squadron is expected to be completed soon. It is a potent system in terms of its operational capability provide continuous and effective air defence system to a very large area. A contract has been signed on 5 October 2018 for delivery of S-400 system from Russia. 
  • AK 203 assault rifles: to manufacture in UP defence corridor in Amethi  district, Uttar Pradesh for 5 lakh rifles with a worth Rs. 5,100 crore in a joint production. This deal is finalised at a meeting of 2+2 ministerial dialogue in December, 2021. Cabinet Committee on security (CCS) approved the production of AK 203 rifle to replace the 3 decades old INSAS rifles.


Energy Cooperation 

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on collaboration in coking coal sector 

Dated: 14 October 2021

Features:

  • This Memorandum envisages implementation of joint projects/ commercial activities in coking coal
  • Long term supply of high quality coking coal to India 
  • Collaboration in development of coking coal deposits 
  • Logistics development 
  • Sharing of experience in coking coal production and management 
  • Collaboration in Processing as well as training 
Coking coal is used in steel manufacturing and in R&D in steel sectors.


Space Cooperation:  for India's Gaganyan mission Russia had trained 8 astronauts to go into space as manned mission 

2+2 ministerial dialogue of defence and foreign ministers :
  • Finalized the production of AK 203 assault rifles 
  • Two ways investment target has been setup of $50 billion 
  • Delivery of S-400 
  • Agreement in trade, space, technology and energy signed 
  • Renewal of their military technical Cooperation for 2021- 31.
  • Cooperation in connectivity  to regional 
  • Afghanistan issue
