SELA TUNNEL

The Sela Tunnel is part of the Balipara-Chardaur-Tawang road, one of the key strategic projects near the Chinese border.

Location: It is located  at Nuranang in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Security Challanges: 

  1. Winter connectivity to Tawang over the 14000-foot pass, posed a logistic challenge for the army for decades, with the movement of men, weapons, and stores severely affected. All weather connectivity in this sector is critical for security purposes.
  2. Intrusion and aggressiveness of Chinese Army.
Features:
  • The Sela Tunnel, a Rs. 700 -crore project was announced in 2018, is the longest twin ( two) lane tunnel above 13000 feet in the world.
  • The Sela project is being completed by the Border Road Organisation. It is using Australian technology that involves observing, studying the rock, and designing tunnel supports.  It involves 3 tunnels: 
    • A main tunnel: the main tunnel has length of 1,555 meters;
    • Escape tunnel: the same length 1,555 meters it has also. only tunnel longer than 1,500 meters have to have an escape passage alongside;
    • Shorter  tunnel and a road connecting the main and the 3rd tunnel: the shorter tunnel has a length of 980 meter and the road stretches 1,200 meters.
Benefits: 
  • The Sela Tunnel will mobilise speedy and swifter deployment of troops and weapons at forward  border areas in the time of need near the Line of Actual Control (LAC),  in Tawang sector.
  • It will boost  national security and ensure socio-economic development of the regions.
  • It will enhance army's logistic support capability.
  • It will cut down the travel time to Tawang by at least one hour as well as provide all weather connectivity.
