What are hall marks ?
These are special mark designed by the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) to identify purity, quality and fineness to make consumer aware for purchase of gold jewellery/ artefacts.
Aim:
- To make consumer aware about the purity of gold
- To assure quality product
- To transparency
- In India currently total 256 district are selling hall marks jewellery.
- Only registered seller with BIS are able to sell hallmark products
- It was released in July 2021 for 14 karat gold , 18 karat gold and 22 karat gold.
- Currently, 976 recognized Assaying Hallmarking Centre are operative in the country.
- India is the largest importer of gold.
Mandatory Hallmarking
Now government has decided to launch Mandatory Hallmarking in all districts of the country where there will be at least one assaying and Hallmarking centre (AHC) from June 2022 onwards.
For this BIS has taken measures to facilitate through automation software.
- On line registration
- Zero registration fee for jewellers
- Lifetime validation of registration
- Jewellers have to be registered with BIS
Hall Marks
Three are three types of marks for Gold
- BIS logo
- Purity in karat and fineness of gold ( e.g.22K916, 18K750, 14K585)
- Six digit alfanumeric HUID code AAAAAA
