                     Lucy Mission 

 It is a space mission of National Aeronautics Space Authorities (NASA), the United States of America, to probe the Trojans asteroids of Jupiter and was launch on 16th October 2021. Total eight steroids are targeted one is from main steroid belt and seven from Trojans steroids of Jupiter. This mission is launched for a period of 12 years steroids' information gathering. 

Lucy Mission is a 12 year expedition to study a record number of asteroids.

It is the first to explore the Trojans, thousands of rocky objects orbiting the sun in two swarms - one ahead of the path of giant gas planet Jupiter and one behind it.

There is a hope  that Lucy's close-up fly-by of seven Trojans will yield new clues to how the solar system's planets came to formed some 4.5 billion years ago and what shaped their present configuration. 

Lucy lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.  It was carried aloft by an Atlas V rocket from United launch Alliance. 

Lucy is named after the 3.2 million years old skeletal remains of a human ancestor found in Ethiopia nearly a half century ago. That discovery got its name from the 1967 Beatles song " Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds "

Lucy's $981 million mission is the first to aim for Jupiter's so called Trojan entourage: thousands- if not millions of asteroids that share the gas giant's expansive orbit around the sun. Some of the Trojan asteroids precede Jupiter in its orbit, while others trail it.  Despite their orbits,the Trojans are far from the planet and mostly scattered far from each other. 


Aim: information gathering about mass, density, matter avaliable, formation, relations with human evolution  etc.

What is asteroids?

Asteroids are groups of celestial bodies, are  very small in mass and diameter acompare to planet and are solid, are revolving around the Sun in solar system. The groups of steroids are mainly exists between Mars and Jupiter forms a belt called main steroids belt. In solar system, there are other steroids revolving around the sun.

What is Trojans steroids?

Those steroids that revolving around the sun in  the same orbital  path of other larger planet is known as Trojans asteroids like Jupiter Trojans steroids. Trojan asteroids two large clusters of space rocks that scientists believe are remnants of primordial material that formed the solar system's outer planet. 

    • These coorbitals are generally found in the same orbit of the planet Jupiter. 
    • There are two steroid groups in the orbit of Jupiter one is leading groups ( Greeks/preceding / before Jupiter) and the second is known as trailing groups ( Trojans/following / after Jupiter).
    • However other planets have Trojans too, such as four Martian Trojans  and 23 Nepturian Trojans.
    • Believed to be rich in Carbon compound. 
    • The Trojans asteroids are left overs from the early days of our Solar system, effectively the fossils of planet formation. 

NASA is planning an other mission to test whether humans might be able to alter an asteroids orbit.
