The scheme allows retail investors/individuals to invest in government securities/ bonds of Rs 74 lakh crores directly through bank account With RBI.
It was launched by the Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi on 11th November 2021.
Vision- Financial inclusion for inclusive growth
Aim:
- To bring middle class employees, senior citizens, small businesses men and othe common man to invest in government securities directly and securely by easing/ simplifying reach to government bonds.
- Promotion of foreign and domestic investments
Salient features
- Retail participants can open bank accounts( retail direct gilt account ) with RBI free of cost through on line link https://rbiretaildirect.org.in/
- Retail participants are able to maintain their accounts online.
- Payment for transaction can be through the saving account, internet banking, or unified Payment interface.
- It is free of cost and requires on intermediaries.
- Individuals can now purchase, treasury bills, dated securities, sovereign gold bonds and state development loans from primary and secondary markets
- Retail investors can invest as little as Rs 10,000 directly through the account with RBI.
- In primary market retail investors can place a bid for participating in primary auction of government securities
- In secondary market, retail investors can buy and sell government securities.
