POWAI LAKE
- According to the National Wetland Atlas of the Supreme Court, Powai Lake is an important wetland in terms of biodiversity and should be protected for the purpose of conserving wetlands.
- Centre's Wetlands ( Conservation and Management ) and the Indian Wildlife Act (1972), seeing as it is also the Habitat of the Indian Marsh Crocodile a protected species under schedule1, part 2 in Amphibians and Reptiles.
- Fauna like white throated kingfisher, Small blue kingfisher, Indian Spot build duck, Indian Pond Herons are well known species of birds.
- wetlands across India are known to be extremely diverse in terms of their origins (natural or man made), water source (fresh water or brackish) and the biodiversity they sustain.
- There is an issue that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation making cycle track around the lake that should be stopped.
- Waste are being disposed off in the lake that threatening the diversity of the lake.
- Depth of the lake is decreasing gradually.
- Now, water is unfit for drinking purposes.
- The convention defines wetlands as "areas of marsh, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent and temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh ,brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which, at low tides, does not exceed six meters".
- India is a party to the Ramsar Convention, an International treaty which pledges the Countries commitment to wetland conservation.
