 It was decided in 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly on the request of Food and Agriculture organizations ( FAO) to focus on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for sustainable management of soil. 

Theme for 2021 is 

" Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity "
